Homemade Apple Pie
This simple, homemade apple pie is warm and comforting, perfect for an autumn afternoon. With just a few ingredients, you can create a dessert that will fill your home with the smell of fresh-baked goodness.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 to 8 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons butter
Method
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the chilled, diced butter and blend with a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough forms a ball. Divide the dough in half and shape into discs. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Roll out one disc of dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place the crust in the pie plate and trim the edges.
- In a bowl, toss the apple slices with sugar and cinnamon until well coated. Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust and dot with butter.
- Roll out the second disc of dough and place over the apples. Seal and flute the edges. Cut several slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, or until apples are soft and crust is golden brown.
- Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack before serving.
